Short biography of Horten Werneck

Horten Werneck (1961) is a Brazilian painter, designer and sculptor, living in Embu das Artes — SP — BR. “I have given some prevalence to signing recent productions with the pseudonyms Horten Werneck or Têncio Werneck. Although there is physical record of the presence of some drawings/studies using the second pseudonym already in the eighties, found in my private collection. Both pseudonyms have a total of thirteen letters in their composition. There is a certain fascination in my thoughts with this numeral. The pseudonyms H. Werneck, H.W and Hortêncio Werneck are only present in works signed until 2016”. Influences: Volpi, Modigliani, Picasso, among others.

Acquisition of his works of art by collectors from various countries. Returns to the visual arts circuit in 2022, now in line with his third marriage, celebrado no ano de 2021 com a pedagoga Raquel Dias Werneck.

Although he is not linked to any political party, he is in tune with social issues involving his country and the world in which he lives. His works are full of this theme. A small collection of his recent works is on display at his residence located in the city of Embu das Artes, SP.

Childhood and youth

Hortêncio José Werneck de Souza was born in Leopoldina, Minas Gerais on October 20, 1961. Son of José de Souza Carmo and Maria do Rosário Werneck Carmo. Father of three children: Hortêncio Werneck Junior from his first marriage; Andressa Werneck and Gabriela Werneck from her second marriage. Family of five siblings, three women and two men. I am the third of the brothers. At the age of nine, around 1970 and without the common understanding of assimilating a certain need for a greater desire and, out of delight, having to handle everyday objects, pieces of wood, iron, waste, among scribbles and experiments, marks the beginning of my trajectory in the visual arts. During this period we had the Instituto Universal Brasileiro, so I tried to enroll in the drawing course. These were important moments in which I practiced observational drawing. In later years this feat was replaced by regular drawing and painting courses. A memorable time was when he participated in Volpi's 80th birthday celebration. It was a big party in the Cambuci neighborhood — SP. Not so far away, I, a young lover of fine arts, lived very close to the honoree's house. Like the others, he had received a handful of paint, a brush and an easel. The proposal was to paint something relevant to the honoree. I participated in that important moment and set off on my way to Volpi's house. There I congratulated him and we talked about art and he gave me some tips on using tempera on canvas. A process that he himself had developed in a very simple way. By the way, if you asked me about the painted canvas I wouldn't know how to answer. I painted it, signed it and never saw it again.

Adulthood and the certainty of the path in the visual arts

Adulthood had arrived, and with it admission to the Faculty of Fine Arts of SP. A great moment when, not so far away at Estação da Luz, I shared my time with the wood carving course at the Liceu de Artes e Ofício de SP. Important scene in which Victor Brecheret passed. The certainty that he would follow the path of the arts as a life project was evident in his eagerness to do so. I didn't think about anything other than technical and artistic improvement.

Trip to Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais

At that time, houses were in fashion, and this theme was explored a lot. So off we went, me, the suitcase and my painting easel heading to that picturesque city in Minas Gerais. I stayed at an inn and stayed there for seven days. During the time I was there, I did several live painting sessions capturing the famous houses of the charming city of Minas Gerais. A fascinating experience for a young artist, who brought several canvases painted in Ouro Preto in his suitcase.

Beginning of the professional phase

In the mid-eighties, he participated in several events related to the visual arts. Participation in art salons, collective and individual exhibitions. Always marked with good commercial prospects and intellectual and artistic advancement. I remember the exhibition of gouaches and watercolors exhibited in an individual exhibition that I held at the invitation of the Círculo Militar de SP. The exhibition in question brings back good memories for me. During the exhibition, a musical concert took place in the annex to the exhibition site. A charming theater at a remarkable moment in which there were good conversations he had with a poet who had visited the exhibition on that occasion, good conversations, those about art and its context. Another memorable moment was when, in the same period, he exhibited, at the invitation of Shopping Ibirapuera with the support of the now extinct Unibanco, an individual art exhibition with a live painting exhibition. It was a big party. Public success and sales. All the paintings had been sold. Another memorable and memorable space in my artistic journey. TOP CENTER — SP with KARVY JOALHERIA supporting me for several years — it was in the mid-eighties with individual exhibitions that I had in this commercial space on Av. Paulista. There I was able to structure myself commercially, with good sales prospects to collectors from various countries. In my space I usually received visits from universities, critics, collectors, friends, girlfriends, artists, students, among others. An unusual event occurred with the disappearance of a large batch of paintings, which was later clarified.

Change of focus

Back in 1992, I went through the SEBRAE system. At the institution's invitation, I developed a marketing and advertising proposal aimed at visual programming for small and medium-sized companies, which until then had been lacking in the development of their promotional pieces: logo, folder, catalogs, among others. Based on this need, we created the São Paulo Visual Arts Center — CAV program. The project in question revolved around the need for designers focused on these companies, in partnership with the private sector, as well as the development of lectures aimed at this sector and a guide for advertising companies — service providers — GUIA CAV. It contained a record of professionals focused on developing actions that met this demand. It was five long years in this endeavor, and I was still able to dedicate myself even partially to the visual arts, creating a series of paintings on paper during this period.

Break in artistic career and entry into Education

In mid-2002, he began his teaching career as an art teacher in public and private institutions for twenty long years. Before that, however, he got his degree in visual arts at FMU University and MONTESSORI. During this period he dedicated himself to teaching and learning art for high school students. In parallel, he pursues his artistic career informally. During this period, he created several painting series that have been displayed on the internet ever since. Year 2000, a milestone in the transition between an artistic career and entry into Education with the solo exhibition of the series

Cultural effervescence in the 80s

I was able to live and enjoy a large part of the cultural effervescence that we experienced in São Paulo in the 80s. Many art galleries around Paulista and Jardins. Cultural institutions focused on the visual arts, among many others. We stumbled upon art and culture. Outdoor exhibitions, in shopping malls, everything was very wonderful and unique during this period. You could breathe art in this wonderful city. Most of my solo exhibitions during this period were held in commercial spaces such as shopping centers, hotels and large restaurants. Eldorado, for example, sponsored several of my solo exhibitions in the eighties, with vernissage and everything. The Hilton and São Paulo hotels somehow always had exhibitions for artists from the interior or even from other states, always honoring us with some art exhibition in the City of São Paulo. Newsstands had several magazines focused on the visual arts available. Newspapers and magazines had a section just for exhibitions and cultural displays
